This Jane’s Walk, taking place in South Downtown, focuses on themes of Environment and History & Culture.

What's living in the city right alongside you?

Join Jessyca Holland of the Atlanta City Studio and Jim Hackler, sustainability advocate, journalist, and community organizer for a walk through South Downtown that looks at how green spaces survive and thrive in an urban environment. The route visits pocket habitats, native plantings, and a community garden, and passes through a neighborhood in active transformation — with historic buildings being restored and annual gardens giving way to perennial native and pollinator plantings. Along the way, you'll learn how these small patches of habitat function as stepping stones for migrating insects and urban wildlife.

The walk begins at Azalea Fresh Market and ends at the Five Points Community Garden. MARTA riders can take the train to Five Points station, right around the corner from the starting point. Parking is available at the surface lot on Pryor and Wall Street.

About the Walk Leaders

Jessyca Holland is with the Atlanta City Studio, an urban design laboratory within the City of Atlanta's Department of City Planning. Learn more at atlcitystudio.org.

Jim Hackleris a longtime sustainability advocate, journalist, and community organizer whose career has bridged national green building initiatives and local gardening projects. As the former head of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Homes program and the Southeast’s EarthCraft House initiative, Jim helped shape how builders and homeowners think about “what it means to be green.” Today, he brings that same passion for practical sustainability to the ground level as a leader and volunteer with Atlanta’s Five Points Community Garden, where he helps coordinate growing efforts, community workshops, and neighborhood outreach. A downtown Atlanta resident for more than 20 years, Jim lives his values—navigating city life primarily by bicycle and championing walkable, connected communities. His background in journalism (CNN and Green Builder) continues to inform his storytelling approach, connecting people, policy, and place through clear and compelling communication.
