WE ARE THE DESIGN MUSEUM OF ATLANTA.

Our History

Originally formed as the Atlanta International Museum of Art & Design in 1989, MODA (Museum of Design Atlanta) has grown and evolved over the years to become the only museum in the Southeast dedicated exclusively to the study and celebration of all things design.

In 2011, MODA moved to its current home in the heart of the Midtown Arts District. This transition has been critical to the museum’s recent success, offering premium street visibility and immediate proximity to the city’s most important arts organizations. We feature exhibits in all areas of design — such as architecture, graphic design, and more — in pursuit of bringing the MODA mission and vision to life.

We believe design has the power to inspire change, transform lives, and make the world a better place.

Mission

MODA's mission is to advance the understanding and appreciation of design as the convergence of creativity and functionality through exhibitions, education, and programming for visitors of all ages.

Vision

We pursue our mission because we envision a world that celebrates design as a creative force that inspires change, transforms lives, and makes the world a better place.

Action

The work of our staff and board of directors is structured by two research questions: “What is the museum of the 21st century?” and “Can a design museum change the world?”

We are creating a museum that is radically friendly, addresses contemporary interests and issues, and empowers visitors to think like designers as they face current and future challenges.

  • MODA defines design as a creative force that can solve problems, transform lives, and make the world a better place.

  • MODA is the only museum in the Southeast devoted exclusively to the study and celebration of all things design.

  • MODA is for everyone - designers, design aficionados, and lovers of arts and culture. Our exhibitions are relevant to the 21st century life and our programming reflects the popular zeitgeist.

  • What works for a traditional design museum doesn’t always work for MODA. We challenge norms as we stretch and expand the idea of what a museum can accomplish in its community.

  • MODA practices radical friendliness. Our visitors, members, volunteers, and donors are part of the MODA family.

  • MODA is small but mighty! We do more in a week than many museums do in a month.

  • MODA functions as a center for exchange, offering one-of-a-kind exhibitions and programs meant to inspire action and change in our community.

  • MODA is making history rather than preserving it.
