What is Design Next?
Design Next is a monthly studio experience for high school students (grades 9–12) who want to explore different areas of design, create work they’re proud of, and build a portfolio that reflects their creativity, skills, and identity. See the whole series.
About This Session
In this session of Design Next, students will explore how designers look to nature as a mentor to solve problems in sustainable, innovative ways. Students will research examples of nature-inspired design, then identify an environmental or community challenge they want to solve. From there, they’ll sketch and prototype a concept inspired by patterns, processes, or systems found in the natural world.
What You’ll Do
Learn the basics of biomimicry and how it’s used in design
Explore how natural systems inspire smarter solutions
Choose an environmental or human-centered problem to solve
Research plants, animals, or ecosystems that could inspire your design
Sketch a concept and document your process and reflection for your portfolio
Provide a space to share and provide constructive feedback
Practice collaboration, inclusivity, creative courage, imaginative problem-solving, storytelling, and critical thinking
Whether you’re designing a shading system inspired by leaves, a structure shaped like a beehive, or a water filter modeled after mangrove roots, this session is all about learning from the planet to build a better future.

Gabi Madrid is an art educator in Atlanta, GA. They earned their Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Savannah College of Art & Design and maintain their art practice at South River Art Studios. Their career has involved them in working in public art, set construction for film & tv, metal fabrication and woodworking. They are currently enrolled at Georiga State University to earn their Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture to teach higher education.

We will be able to most effectively help everyone learn and enjoy this experience if we know about those needs in advance of the program.
