What is Design Next?

Design Next is a monthly studio experience for high school students (grades 9–12) who want to explore different areas of design, create work they’re proud of, and build a portfolio that reflects their creativity, skills, and identity. See the whole series.

About This Session

This month in Design Next, students will explore how graphic design, music, and storytelling come together in the form of album cover art. Through guided design activities, students will look at how color, typography, layout, and symbolism are used to visually express sound, mood, and meaning. They’ll explore real-world examples of iconic album covers before creating their own using digital or hand-drawn techniques.

What You’ll Do

  • Analyze iconic and experimental album covers across genres and eras

  • Choose or imagine a musical artist, theme, or genre to design for

  • Sketch and create your own album cover using digital tools or analog materials

  • Reflect on how your design communicates emotion, style, and story

  • Add your completed album art, concept notes, and process sketches to your portfolio

  • Provide a space to share and provide constructive feedback

  • Practice collaboration, inclusivity, creative courage, imaginative problem-solving, storytelling, and critical thinking

This session is all about translating sound into visuals and creating a cover that stands out, speaks up, and makes people want to press play.
