What is Design Next?

Design Next is a monthly studio experience for high school students (grades 9–12) who want to explore different areas of design, create work they’re proud of, and build a portfolio that reflects their creativity, skills, and identity. See the whole series.

About This Session

This month in Design Next, students will explore the world of interior design. Students will design a small interior space of their choosing like a bedroom, studio,or study zone, thinking through layout, color, lighting, and furniture. They’ll prototype a 3D version using chipboard, paper, or foam and document the process as part of their portfolio.

What You’ll Do

  • Learn basic interior design principles: layout, scale, function, and aesthetic

  • Create a mood board to explore color, texture, and materials

  • Sketch and plan a functional room or creative interior space

  • Build a small 3D model of your design

  • Add photos, sketches, and design notes to your portfolio

  • Provide a space to share and provide constructive feedback

  • Practice collaboration, inclusivity, creative courage, imaginative problem-solving, storytelling, and critical thinking

Whether you’re designing your dream studio or reimagining a peaceful retreat, this session will help you turn interior spaces into expressions of purpose and personality.
