What is Design Next?

Design Next is a monthly studio experience for high school students (grades 9–12) who want to explore different areas of design, create work they’re proud of, and build a portfolio that reflects their creativity, skills, and identity. See the whole series.

About This Session

This month in Design Next, students will explore the visual storytelling and creative decision-making behind video game design. Students will imagine and design either a unique game character or an environment, focusing on concept development, sketching, and design thinking. They’ll explore how design choices communicate mood, purpose, and backstory, and learn how professional designers shape immersive game experiences through art and narrative.

What You’ll Do

  • Explore how game designers create compelling characters and immersive environments

  • Choose to focus on either a character or a world for your own imagined game

  • Sketch concept art and develop a backstory or world description

  • Design details like costume, setting, mood, lighting, or terrain features

  • Add your final artwork, character sheet or environment map, and design notes to your portfolio

  • Provide a space to share and provide constructive feedback

  • Practice collaboration, inclusivity, creative courage, imaginative problem-solving, storytelling, and critical thinking

From villains with a secret past to cities in the clouds, this session is your chance to design a playable world and show how your imagination can shape the future of games
