What is Design Next?
Presented by the Museum of Design Atlanta in partnership with the Peachtree Branch of the Fulton County Library System, Design Next is a free architecture program for students in grades 9-12. See the whole series.
In this session, we’ll explore how interior designers shape the way people experience architectural spaces. Students will learn how furniture, lighting, color, materials, texture, and circulation work together. They’ll create environments that are functional, comfortable, and visually engaging.
What You’ll Do
Explore the principles and philosophies of interior design
Create a mood board to develop your design concept
Design a bedroom, classroom, or creative studio
Organize furniture, lighting, materials, and color into a cohesive space
Consider functionality alongside aesthetics
Add your interior design project to your design portfolio
Share your work and receive constructive feedback
Practice creativity, planning, empathy, and design communication

Gabi Madrid is an art educator in Atlanta, GA. They earned their Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Savannah College of Art & Design and maintain their art practice at South River Art Studios. Their career has involved them in working in public art, set construction for film & tv, metal fabrication and woodworking. They are currently enrolled at Georiga State University to earn their Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture to teach higher education.
