SPACED OUT! NASA DESIGN CHALLENGES

Grades 4 - 8 | Up to 30 Students

How do NASA engineers and designers think and what problems are they trying to solve right now?

Those are the questions we’ll take on in this virtual workshop led by a MODA educator.

We’ll learn how lunar landings work and talk about the ways that robots help us with space exploration. We’ll also talk about some of the challenges facing NASA engineers and designers now and try our hand at solving them.

Along the way, students will get familiar with a free, online, computer-aided design program called Tinkercad that they can keep using for other projects even after this workshop!

  • Our virtual workshops are completely FREE for Title I schools!

For non-Title I schools, each virtual field trip is $250.

Once we’ve agreed upon a date and time for your in-museum field trip, we’ll send you an invoice. Payment must be made at least two weeks in advance of your scheduled field trip or upon receipt if scheduling within two weeks. Payment can be made by credit card, debit card, or check. Students will learn:

  • About outer space, especially the moon and lunar landings

  • Strategies to tackle design problems that NASA engineers are facing right now and try to come up with solutions

  • How to use easy-to-use and free computer-aided design (CAD) program that they can keep using even after the workshop

  • To have fun!

Students will need:

  • A way to connect virtually via Zoom, Teams, or another platform (MODA can provide this if you cannot)

  • A laptop and a mouse or a tablet for each student

  • Each student will need to create a free account on TinkerCad.com prior to the workshop. They can keep using this after the workshop for other projects!
