8.5” x 11” AVIATION
Grades 6 - 12 | Up to 30 Students
In this virtual workshop led by a MODA instructor, students will think like designers and engineers as they explore the physics of flight!
Together, we’ll discuss core concept regarding the physics of flight and investigate the mechanisms at work on modern planes. Next, we’ll explore how different shapes and designs can optimize planes for speed, distance, and maneuvering.
Finally, we’ll put our knowledge to the test by experimenting with different paper plane prototypes. Students will have a chance to design their very own paper airplane optimized for speed, distance, beauty, and anything else!
Please email Leslie Yarborough at education@museumofdesign.org with any questions.
Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE)
This field trip covers standards in the following areas and grade levels.
Mathematics: 6-12

Our virtual workshops are completely FREE for Title I schools!
For non-Title I schools, each virtual field trip is $250.
Once we’ve agreed upon a date and time for your in-museum field trip, we’ll send you an invoice. Payment must be made at least two weeks in advance of your scheduled field trip or upon receipt if scheduling within two weeks. Payment can be made by credit card, debit card, or check. Please email education@museumofdesign.org with any questions.
Please note: registrations cancelled within two weeks prior to the field trip will result in a refund of 60%. No refunds will be available for cancellations less than two weeks prior to the date of the workshop, class, or program.
Students will learn to:
Learn the principles of physics that allow planes to fly
Put those principles of physics to work as they fold and fly their own planes
Participate in hands-on experimentation with paper craft, geometry, math, and science
Become familiar with engineering design processes and design thinking processes
Give and receive constructive feedback
Have fun!
Students will need:
A way to connect virtually via Zoom, Teams, or another platform (MODA can provide this if you cannot)
Paper, pencils, rulers (or other straight edges)
8.5 x 11” paper
