About the Event:

Join us for a guided tour of Salt: A Design Story.

Salt is one of the most essential materials on earth, and one of the most overlooked. Found in oceans, deserts, mountains, and underground, it has shaped where cities rose, how money moved, what people ate through winter, and which empires survived. Humans didn't invent salt, but to secure it, harvest it, and control it, we designed the world around it.

This exhibition brings together geology, history, food science, craft, ritual, and architecture to show how a single mineral has driven design across every era and culture. Seen together, these stories reveal salt as a hidden hand behind some of humanity's most consequential decisions. They remind us that the most powerful design stories are often hiding in plain sight, in the objects we use without a second thought.

On this tour, you’ll:

  • Examine how the need for salt shaped the location of roads, cities, and trade routes

  • Explore how cultures across the world built ritual and meaning around a single mineral

  • Talk about the craft revival bringing regional flavor and traditional harvesting methods back to a once-standardized product

  • Consider how salt continues to shape design today, from architecture and packaging to the food on your plate
