MODA Members Meetup: Inside The Auction, Life of an Object

What happens to a remarkable piece of art or design between the moment it leaves a collection and the moment it finds its next home?

An auction is more than a sale. It is a place where stories develop, collections reveal connections, and design finds new audiences.

Join fellow MODA members at Ahlers & Ogletree for a behind-the-scenes look at how an auction comes together. Just days before Ahlers & Ogletree's upcoming Modern & Contemporary Art & Design auction, we'll explore an extraordinary selection of objects and learn how they are researched, valued, catalogued, marketed, and ultimately brought to the auction floor.

For MODA members, this is an opportunity to look at familiar design history from a new perspective and get a closer look at the people and processes that shape the life of an object after it leaves a collection.

What to Expect

  • A private preview of highlights from the upcoming auction, including works by Alex Katz, Keith Haring, Alvar Aalto, Harry Bertoia, Edward Wormley, Adrian Pearsall, Dale Chihuly, Toots Zynsky, Lino Tagliapietra, and the Moulthrop family

  • A behind-the-scenes tour of Ahlers & Ogletree and a closer look at how an auction house operates

  • A conversation about where objects come from, how they are researched and evaluated, and how collections become compelling stories

  • An inside look at the auction process, from consignment and cataloguing to marketing, preview, and bidding

  • Time to connect with fellow MODA members and explore the objects on view.

  • Space is limited.
