Guided Tour of Please Be Seated: Chairs That Do More Than Sit There

  • Museum of Design Atlanta 1315 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA, 30309 United States (map)

In-Person

Join us on Saturday, February 24th, at 2:00 PM for a guided tour of our new exhibition, Please Be Seated: A Century of Chair Design!

Chairs are essential to our everyday lives: they shape our interactions with others, enhance our productivity, and support our well-being. They can be symbols of power, beautiful works of art, objects that bring fun, or represent authority. On this guided tour, we will be exploring chairs that do more than just “sit there!”

We will talk about the ways in which chairs symbolize space, identity, and empowerment, and look at what it means to create your own seat at the table by focusing on a selection of chairs designed by local artists, organizations, and community groups. We will also discuss how our digital age has changed chair design, and highlight a few in our collection that capture the advancements and innovations of our modern era.

‌About the Exhibition

Dive into chair design in Please Be Seated: A Century of Chair Design, an exhibit that invites you to rethink the roles of chairs in our lives. From classic to contemporary, this exhibition will take you on a journey through more than a century of chair design, exploring the stories behind exquisite pieces of furniture by designers like Eileen Gray, Ron Arad, Philippe Starck, Moooi, Verner Panton, Paola Lenti, and others, whose work makes homes more beautiful and our bodies more comfortable.
