What is Design Next?

Design Next is a monthly studio experience for high school students (grades 9–12) who want to explore different areas of design, create work they’re proud of, and build a portfolio that reflects their creativity, skills, and identity. See the whole series.

About This Session

In this session of Design Next, students will step into the world of footwear design. Teens will learn how sneaker designers blend materials, color, and form to create shoes that are stylish, high-performing, and meaningful. Then they’ll design and prototype a sneaker that reflects their personal identity or meets a specific performance goal.

What You’ll Do

  • Learn how sneaker design intersects with identity, culture, and innovation

  • Sketch out your concept using design templates

  • Choose a performance need or story that inspires your design

  • Build a basic 3D prototype using paper, foam, fabric, and other hands-on materials

  • Add photos, sketches, and a written description to your design portfolio

  • Provide a space to share and provide constructive feedback

  • Practice collaboration, inclusivity, creative courage, imaginative problem-solving, storytelling, and critical thinking

Whether you’re inspired by fashion, sports, streetwear, or self-expression, this is your chance to create a sneaker that’s all your own.
