In-Person at the Fulton County Library
9th–12th Grade

What is Design Next?

Presented by the Museum of Design Atlanta in partnership with the Peachtree Branch of the Fulton County Library System, Design Next is a free architecture program for students in grades 9-12. See the whole series.

In this session, we’ll explore how architects use drawing to observe, communicate, and develop ideas. Students will practice observational sketching techniques used by designers while learning how line weight, contour drawing, and perspective help communicate three-dimensional spaces on paper. Through guided exercises and architectural sketching, students will strengthen their drawing skills while learning to see the built environment in new ways.

What You’ll Do

  • Learn why sketching is an essential tool for architects

  • Practice blind contour drawing and observational sketching

  • Explore line weight and how it creates depth and emphasis

  • Learn one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective drawing

  • Sketch architectural features and everyday spaces

  • Add observational drawings to your design portfolio

  • Share your work and receive constructive feedback

  • Practice observation, visual communication, spatial thinking, patience, and creative confidence

New to drawing or already filling sketchbooks at home? This session will help you see like a designer and sketch with purpose.
