What is Design Next?

Design Next is a monthly studio experience for high school students (grades 9–12) who want to explore different areas of design, create work they’re proud of, and build a portfolio that reflects their creativity, skills, and identity. See the whole series.

About This Session

Over the past eight months, they’ve explored diverse areas of design. Now, it’s time to pull it all together into a personal design portfolio. Students will review the work they’ve created throughout the year, select their strongest pieces, and reflect on their creative growth. They’ll learn basic portfolio strategies. The session will culminate in a final showcase where students can share their designs and process with peers.

What You’ll Do

  • Review and organize your work from previous sessions

  • Choose portfolio highlights that represent your skills and interests

  • Write short descriptions or reflections for each selected piece

  • Learn how to photograph and format your work for digital or printed portfolios

  • Participate in a final “pin-up” session where you present your work in a gallery-style setup

  • Provide a space to share and provide constructive feedback

  • Practice collaboration, inclusivity, creative courage, imaginative problem-solving, storytelling, and critical thinking

This session is all about celebrating your progress and preparing to take your creativity to the next level. You’ll leave with a portfolio that captures who you are as a designer and where you’re headed next.
