BUILD A SALT CITY

For Grades 6 – 12

During this in-museum field trip, a MODA instructor will guide students through an exploration of how salt has influenced the design of human settlements for thousands of years. Students will discover why salt has been such a valuable resource and learn how access to salt has shaped cities, roads, canals, ports, trade routes, and other important infrastructure around the world.

Students will then take on the role of urban designers by drawing a unique salt source, such as a mountain salt mine, underground salt brine, or ocean water. Using their assigned resource, they will determine the best way to harvest, transport, store, and distribute salt while considering the infrastructure their community will need to support it.

After exploring these ideas, students will design and build their own salt city using LEGO® bricks. Along the way, students will practice systems thinking, problem solving, and creative design to show how natural resources influence the way communities grow, connect, and thrive.

    Once we’ve agreed upon a date and time for your in-museum field trip, we’ll send you an invoice. Payment must be made at least two weeks in advance of your scheduled field trip or upon receipt if scheduling within two weeks. Payment can be made by credit card, debit card, or check. Please email education@museumofdesign.org with any questions.

    Please note: registrations cancelled within two weeks prior to the field trip will result in a refund of 60%. No refunds will be available for cancellations less than two weeks prior to the date of the workshop, class, or program.
