Urban Evolution: Exploring the Past, Present, and Future of Summerhill

  • 40 Georgia Avenue SE 40 Georgia Avenue Southeast Atlanta, GA, 30312 United States (map)

In-person

This Jane’s Walk, taking place in Summerhill, focuses on themes of advocacy, history, and culture.

Join Darin Givens — the writer behind ATL Urbanist — for a walk focused on Atlanta's first Bus Rapid Transit line, which is being built in an area south of Downtown that has experienced huge changes over the last 100 years.

Once, it was a leafy, walkable neighborhood centered on Washington Street, but it was entirely razed in the 1960s to make way for the interstates (20, 75, 85) and the Atlanta Fulton Stadium.

Today, the street now known as Capitol Avenue/Hank Aaron Drive is not only host to an exciting new BRT line — it's the center of an amazing amount of development, as a new neighborhood emerges where an old one was lost. Plus it's a neighborhood that will be served by a type of transit that's well known in cities across the world, but is new to Atlanta!
