Last Month at MODA: July 2019

Designers! Design lovers! Friends of MODA! While you’ve been cruisin’ through July, catchin’ sun and sippin’ drinks poolside, we’ve been getting up to some summer fun ourselves. Check it out:

  • We finished out campMODA 2019 with a bang—July was one of the most jam-packed months yet. Campers filled up two sessions of Architectural Design, Stories in 3D, and Engineering Lab, as well as a stellar new Robot Rock Band camp and one last session of Minecraft Green City.

  • MODA members took a field trip to Atlanta’s own Second Self Beer Company, where they got to hang out with founder Jason Santamaria and chat about how Second Self started, “beer architecture,” and the stories behind Second Self’s signature brews. The beer tasting and trivia were pretty cool, too.

  • Artist and author Adam J. Kurtz stopped by to meet with his readers for a booksigning and a reading from his new book, Things are What You Make of Them. He was, if this writer may say so, an absolute delight. His advice was great, too, if a little non-conventional. One of the best bits of sage wisdom? “Try trying!”

  • We hosted internationally renowned designer Craig Frazier for a Design Conversation and, the next morning, he came back to MODA for an intimate workshop for local designers.

  • We had a hoot of a time on Design Club Day as we prepared for the Parliament of Owls Lantern Parade! Let us tell you owl about it: attendees were able to craft their own owl masks, lanterns, and reflective protective gear for the celebration, as well as tour our new exhibition, Wire & Wood: Designing Iconic Guitars, free of charge.

  • We kicked off our new partnership with Atlanta-based spoken word duo Nobody Likes Us, But We’re Here Anyway with In-Verse: An Evening of Poetry and Spoken Word. This open mic night with stellar headliners Theresa Davis and Erin C was the first of many to come, and we’re excited to keep the ball rolling with our next open mic in August.

  • The last July event you should know about was one you couldn’t put on your calendar—it was a Sofar Sounds pop-up concert featuring three amazing headliners: DeJah “TooDopeforRehab” Ault, Ephraim Nehemia, and Travis Bigwood and the Lonesome Doves. MODA looked so good as a concert venue, Sofar came back for another show at the beginning of August. Pretty rockin’.

As we move into August, be on the look out for more events! This Saturday is our members-only tour of Primal Screen, and Sunday is our Sonic Playground Design Club Day—remember to bring your family in for a day of soundmaking fun, free of charge! Then we’ll be hosting another In-Verse open mic night with Nobody Likes Us, But We’re Here Anyway on the 15th, and the 20th will see the first workshop in our Design for Non-Designers series led by Atlanta designer Sarah Lawrence. You’ll want to stick around for our last big event of the month, too: a Design Conversation with Ashleigh Axios, creative director for the Obama White House, on the 22nd.

Okay, get back to your weekend. Just remember to take some time to join in the fun this month at MODA!
