Field Trip: E-Textiles (Grades 6-12)

Did you know that designers and scientists have been developing temperature sensing garments to be used as a way to monitor people’s health? In this workshop students will have the opportunity to learn about and experiment with electronic textiles as they craft your own versatile wearable technology and electronic accessories. Join us as we explore how to design objects using e-textiles. You’ll learn some sewing, circuitry basics, and how to combine them both on this field trip! Explore everything from running stitches and tying off thread.

Students will:

  • Learn practical sewing skills

  • Understand the science behind circuits through hands-on experimentation

  • Learn the properties of conductive and non conductive materials

  • Practice electrical safety

  • Balance both functionality and creativity within their designs

  • Learn the science behind series and parallel circuits and how to create them both

  • Learn about some awesome groundbreaking e-textile projects happening around the world
