Design Discourse: Designing Prohibition

In this Design Discourse, we’ll talk about design for banned substances — alcohol to marijuana.

How do you design for things meant to be hidden from the public eye? And how does design change when banned substances are made legal and designers are charged with increasing desirability and demand?

Join us as MODA’s Assistant Director, Lisa Babb leads a discussion about how design drives desire.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • The temperance movement

  • Design for concealment

  • Flappers & speakeasies

  • The design of political campaigns for and against the use of alcohol

  • Branding of alcohol during Prohibition

  • The design of political campaigns for and against marijuana use and legalization.

  • Design and branding of cannabis products after legalization

This event is free with regular museum admission: $10 / $8 seniors & military / $5 students / Free for MODA members. Seating is limited so please please register in advance.
