Defenders of the Planet: Designing Enviro-Bots with LEGO Robotics

For Rising 4th to 7th Graders

We face a lot of challenges in our world. How do we limit pollution and protect the environment? How do we provide everyone with access to food and clean water? How do we clean up the oceans? Robots are already helping with many of these challenges, but we need more innovators thinking about how robots can make life on earth better for everyone. In this camp, young designers will design Enviro-Bots that tackle real-world environmental issues.

All around the world, robot developers and researchers are addressing some of the world’s biggest environmental problems. From Growbot, an unmanned vehicle that plants trees 10 times faster than a human can, to Ocean One, a humanoid SCUBA diver that monitors deep coral reefs in the Red Sea, designers, engineers, and scientists are working together to make a difference. In this week-long camp, we’ll study robots that are protecting the planet to see how they are designed and how they work. Then, campers will team up, choose an environmental issue that’s important to them, and design and prototype a robot that will make a difference.

Over the course of the week, campers will prototype, refine, and test their robots using LEGO NXT. As they do, they’ll learn the technological ins-and-outs of LEGO Robotics (or refine those skills if they already have them), use the Common Block Palette to code their builds, explore the sensors and mechanics needed to make their Enviro-Bots successful, and practice design and engineering skills.

At the end of the week, campers will present what they’ve designed to friends and family.

Campers will:

  • Learn about robots currently working on environmental challenges

  • Adopt and practice design and engineering mindsets

  • Become familiar with and expand LEGO Robotics knowledge

  • Develop engineering skills

  • Work collaboratively in teams

  • Prototype, iterate, and test robots to improve their functionality

  • Develop creative confidence

  • Develop programming skills
