Fashion Hack! Introduction to Sewing and Soft Circuits (Grades 4 to 7)

  • MODA 1315 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA, 30309 United States (map)

Wearable technology is everywhere – from wireless headphones to Apple Watches to LED embedded clothing. Explore this new and exciting type of design in a morning camp session all about fashion and electronic textiles. Scavenge through washed thrifted items provided by MODA and use conductive thread and batteries to hack your fashion and electrify your design!

During this camp, designers will be introduced to basic circuitry concepts using various mediums, like copper foil tape, paper clips, aluminum foil, coin cell batteries and LEDs. Campers will also learn basic sewing skills, from threading a needle to tying a knot to practicing different types of stitches. The skills they’ll acquire from both activities will serve as a foundation for a soft circuit project, in which campers will use conductive thread to add electricity to the project they design. MODA campers will be encouraged to take their projects home, in order to continue iterating.

Campers will:

  • Learn practical sewing skills
  • Understand the science behind circuits through hands-on experimentation
  • Learn the properties of conductive and nonconductive materials
  • Practice electrical safety
  • Balance both functionality and creativity within their designs

MODA Members: $65/ Non-members: $75

Blair Banks, Education Coordinator

Blair strives to combine her studies of race and ethnicity with design in order to create programming for children that is not only relevant to their experiences, but also presents them with ideas that originate beyond their backyards. She crafts unique field trip experiences that support and reinforce classroom learning through hands on activities, and tours of MODA's rotating exhibitions. Blair also heads up MODA's Education Partnerships – a series of meaningful collaborative efforts between MODA and various schools and organizations that strive to incorporate design as a problem solving tool for addressing 21st century challenges.
