Everyone wants to learn how to code! Don’t know where to start?
Join us at MODA to learn the basics of computer coding in our newest workshop series, Building from Scratch, where we’ll be making amazing mazes and learning skills essential to game and animation design. We’ll create a sprite (a character) and program it to navigate obstacles and patrollers without getting sent back to its original starting point!
The tool we’ll use to learn coding basics and building amazing mazes is Scratch, an online block-based coding language that allows young designers to learn how to code in an easy and unique way.
In this introductory workshop, participants will explore how to use two basic command block categories in Scratch - motion and control. These foundational blocks give young coders the ability to make things move and set parameters to their programs or scripts. We’ll also explore how using the X and Y axes is essential in creating new programs, and how lines of code cause our sprites (characters) to move around.
Young designers will also learn how to use the broadcasting tool. In Scratch, a broadcast block can act as a trigger, causing a chain of events to occur as a new line of code runs. By mastering these tools, young designers will not only learn the basics of coding movement and control, but we’ll also learn how these tools can serve as the foundation of game and animation design. Using all of our new found skills, we’ll make our own interactive maze. We’ll create a sprite that has to navigate various obstacles and patrollers without getting sent back to its original starting point!
