Ages 8 and up

Say goodbye to traditional iron-on embroidered patches, and say hello to patches that light up with LEDs. In this new and exciting design + STEAM workshop, we’re mixing fashion with electronics. Design your own unique LED embedded patch and add a bit of personality to your favorite accessory or piece of clothing.

Join us at MODA’s Design Bar and get down to basics. Using a variety of conductive mediums, like copper foil tape, paper clips, aluminum foil, coin cell batteries and LEDs, participants will be introduced to basic circuitry concepts to better understand the science behind their designs. Along with understanding the ins and outs of circuits, participants will master beginner sewing skills, from threading a needle to tying a knot to practicing different types of stitches. The skills that they’ll acquire from both activities will serve as the foundation for their LED embedded patch project. Each participant will receive a sticky foam pinback to attach their patch to their item of choice.

Skills learned:

  • Practical sewing skills

  • The science behind circuits through hands-on experimentation

  • Properties of conductive and nonconductive materials

  • Electrical safety

  • The balance both functionality and creativity within designs

Blair strives to combine her studies of race and ethnicity with design in order to create programming for children that is not only relevant to their experiences, but also presents them with ideas that originate beyond their backyards. She crafts unique field trip experiences that support and reinforce classroom learning through hands on activities, and tours of MODA's rotating exhibitions. Blair also heads up MODA's Education Partnerships – a series of meaningful collaborative efforts between MODA and various schools and organizations that strive to incorporate design as a problem solving tool for addressing 21st century challenges.
