Under My Hood

  • MODA 1315 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA, 30309 United States (map)

What stories are tucked under your hood?

Many people are judged unfairly for the way they look, the way they sound, their gender, who they love, the religion they practice, the country they come from — the list goes on and on. Join us for a night of storytelling at MODA, as your Atlanta neighbors share what’s "under their hood" by talking about who they are in their own voice and on their own terms.

The Under My Hood series was designed by Coleman G. Howard as a safe space, free of judgement, in which people from different backgrounds come together and share the truths that live under their hoods. After receiving a phone call from a young man he was mentoring who had just been stopped by the police for wearing a hood, Coleman wrote a piece titled Under My Hood that shared his story of being a black man living in today’s America. He saw how sharing his story empowered others to share their stories and created the Under My Hood series so that there was a space where others could do the same.

Under My Hood is a step toward creating a world in which the humanity in all of us is recognized and celebrated. The storytelling series has taken place in many different spaces, from the Center for Civil and Human Rights to college classrooms. Each show features different storytellers.

An American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter will be joining us this evening to sign the event.
