Introduction to Arduino: Write Code, Activate Microcontrollers, and Build Circuits (Grades 4-7)

For students in grades 4-7

Monday, April 3, 2017 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Arduino microcontrollers are open-source hardware circuit boards that make it easy and fun to learn about electrical engineering and coding. And Arduino microcontrollers’ patent-free model encourages rapid prototyping and innovation.

In a morning-long session, campers will learn how to write the code that will activate their microcontrollers, allowing them to build circuits from scratch, a skill that any young designer interested in computer science or engineering needs to succeed.

This camp will accommodate both beginners and those more experienced with Arduino. We will provide introductory lessons to breadboarding with resistors, LEDs and more, and discuss the basics of engineering, design and innovation.

Campers will learn:

  • How microcontrollers and electrical hardware components work

  • Electrical safety

  • Breadboarding teration with creating circuits

  • How to find, use, and write script code in Arduino IDE

  • Rapid prototyping with electronic hardware and code

  • Open-source and the art of collaboration

We’ll also give campers their very own Microcontroller Kit, which includes:

  • 1 Adafruit Metro microcontroller

  • 1 Micro-USB to USB-A data cord of quality

  • 1 Half-size breadboard

  • 2 Alligator clip test leads

  • 1 RGB LED

  • 10 Single-color LEDS: 2 each of red, green, blue, yellow, and clear

  • 12 Breadboard wires

  • 4 220 Ω resistors

  • 3 270 Ω resistors

  • 1 Pushbutton

MODA Members: $95 (includes $40 materials fee) / Non-members: $105 (includes $40 materials fee)

Please note: Camp member discounts apply only to MODA Family Membership levels and above.

Please note:  Based on demand, all programs may not be available all weeks. Should the program you request not meet a minimum enrollment, you will be contacted at least a month before your camp session. Should campMODA need a food allergy action plan for your camper, please contact the camp administrator by calling 404.856.5962 or emailing

Campers with learning differences and behavioral needs are welcome at campMODA! We do ask that you please call Blair Banks at 404.979.6455 so that we can have a conversation and discuss your camper’s unique potential, and how to best celebrate their strengths and accommodate their challenges.
