3D Printing with Minecraft: Exploring Architecture

Does your young designer love playing Minecraft? Now they can take their skills to another level by learning how to design buildings in Minecraft and prepare them to be 3D printed.

In this 1.5 hour class, young designers in grades 3-6 will learn the ins and outs of designing for 3D printing. They’ll find out how 3D printers work, create a printable object in Minecraft, and prepare that object for the 3D printer by exporting it to another program.

Most of the class will be spent designing objects and preparing them for print. After participants leave their class session, MODA will print the objects young designers have created. Because print times can be several hours for each object, items will be ready for pick-up within a few days. Arrangements can be made to receive your print by mail as well.

In these classes, young designers will:

  • become conversant with the essentials of 3D printing

  • discover how 3D printers work

  • learn to use Minecraft as a design tool

  • move files from one program to another in order to prepare them to be 3D printed

  • learn about the interoperability of computer programs

  • learn about principles and concepts of design and engineering

  • learn about 3D printing, its materials & its processes
