Subversive Cross Stitch: Hamilton

  • MODA 1315 Peachtree Street NE Atlanta, GA, 30309 United States (map)

History has its eyes on you.

Hamilton’s revolutionary message has struck the hearts of many, subverting the way people think about musicals and about American history. It’s only natural that we celebrate this by subverting something else traditional: cross stitch.

When we design, the balance shifts. Cross a stitch and let the world know what you’re against and what you’re for.

While we talk about the ways Hamilton affected our view of America, you’ll learn how cross-stitch got to be subversive and practice cross-stitching basics. Bring your passion and we’ll provide the hoops, needles, and embroidery floss.

Wait, what the hell is cross stitch?

Cross-stitch is a type of embroidery in which the needlework creates images that look pixelated. Traditionally a way for Western societies to measure a woman’s marriageability, cross-stitch has recently become a vehicle for craftivism (craft activism) and used to assert diverse identities and demand social change.

Don’t wait for it - grab a needle and thread and fabric and join us in this special cross stitch class!

Participation and Materials Fee: $35 for non-members, $30 for MODA members. Or, bring along a friend and pay $50 for a Buddy Pack for Two Adults. This fee covers everything you need to create and bring home your own awesome cross stitch: 4" hoop, AIDA cloth, needle, threader, embroidery floss, and many Hamilton patterns to choose from. Fee includes admission to MODA’s current exhibition.
