Subversive Cross-Stitch Workshop

  • MODA 1315 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA, 30309 United States (map)

Join us on September 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to explore subversive cross-stitch! Cross-stitch is a type of embroidery in which the needlework creates images that look pixelated. Traditionally a way for society to measure a woman’s marriageability, cross-stitch has recently become a vehicle for craftivism (craft activism) and used to assert diverse identities and demand social change. Grab  a needle and thread and fabric and join us as we co-opt traditional designs or create entirely new ones that command attention and express your beliefs.

You’ll learn about how cross-stitch got to be subversive, cross-stitching basics, design creation, and how to bring that design into reality. In the spirit of our current exhibition, Luba Lukova: Designing Justice, we’ll delve into this small sliver of the craftivist movement. Bring your passion and we’ll provide the hoops, needles, and thread.

Fee for participation and materials to create a four inch cross-stitch design: $35 for non-members, $30 for MODA members. Appropriate for ages 15+.
