Invent for Good with littleBits
TAKE THE CHALLENGE
You have the power to design a better world.
In this 1.5 hour class, we challenge young inventors to create an invention that makes a difference in someone else’s life. It can be as simple as helping a friend learn morse code, creating a memory alarm for medication (or ramen), or fabricating a bionic arm out of legos.
Young inventors will work in teams and will think like designers as they invent for good:
CREATE: Inventors will start by thinking about where there are frustrations or difficulties in someone’s life. Then, they'll look through the Bits and materials and brainstorm ways they can build something that will help. They'll sketch out ideas and build a prototype.
PLAY: Next, the inventors will test their prototype. They'll ask for feedback from teammates and others in the class in order to determine how well their invention does its job? They'll take notes about what works and what doesn’t.
REFINE: Based on the feedback they receive, Inventors will evaluate whether or not their invention is successful and what changes need to be made. Then they'll refine their invention to make it work even better!
SHARE: We'll help inventors film a video featuring their inventions!
Young inventors in this class will:
Develop collaborative skills by working in small groups.
Solve problems using the design process.
Practice skills of brainstorming
Use empathy to understand the problems that others face
Test their inventions with other people and learn from the feedback they receive
Learn the basics of electronic circuitry
Film a short movie using digital media tools.
$35 for MODA members / $40 Non-Members
Fee also includes admission to our current exhibitions for the participant and 1 adult.
*Young designers will be using MODA’s littleBits to build. If you want to continue this learning at home, we’re happy to make recommendations about appropriate littleBits sets that can be purchased for home use.*
**littleBits are color-coded electronic circuitry kits that snap together with magnets. littleBits circuitry kits empower students to engineer real world solutions through invention, to kickstart their creativity, and to develop creative confidence through STEAM learning. Our littleBits classes meet Next Generation Engineering Design Standards and Common Core standards.
