Design Like an Astrophysicist: Design Thinking for Aliens Planets (Ages 5 - 7)

  • MODA 1315 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA, 30309 United States (map)

“Finding potential life-bearing worlds among the stars is NASA's next big challenge.”

One of the fastest-growing fields in astrophysics is the study of exoplanets, or planets that orbit another star. MODA continues its partnership with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics with a design thinking workshop that teaches young space enthusiasts about NASA’s exoplanet explorations and the future of its research. NASA astrophysicists have trained MODA educators to present young designers with their most current findings and plans for 2030 and beyond.

This class focuses on the TRAPPIST-1 system. We’ll investigate how scientists collect and analyze data about TRAPPIST-1. Teams will be guided through design thinking exercises to solve challenges for life on TRAPPIST-1’s planets. Teams can present their designs at the end of class for review by Harvard-Smithsonian astrophysicists.

Designers will:

  • Learn about exoplanets
  • Investigate NASA’s tools for exoplanet exploration
  • Engage in the Design Process
  • Learn and strengthen Design Thinking skills
  • Strengthen collaborative skills
  • Expand on problem solving skills
  • Learn about design briefs
  • Design and build models in design teams
